The Steed Spotter and Hope
There’s a Chinese saying 世有伯乐,然后有千里马。千里马常有,而伯乐不常有
In English: “The steed spotter can tell which horse can gallop a thousand miles. Yet, it will take a blue moon for a superb gallant horse to encounter such a spotter.
Find Hope
Must we endure 1000 frog kisses and endless searches to find hope? The steed spotter and the steed wait their blue moon with no guarantee. Even if they find each other, it’s a lazy myth that says everything that follows is magical. There are blanks to fill in about what comes next after the A+ talent shows up. Partnerships take listening, hard work, and hope. Being picky is unavoidable because life is short and regret is long. Search, but prepare to invest in hope.
Hope
Whatever happens, hope. In the dark of the night, how is it possible? Hope is always possible because hopelessness and hope are not generated in our circumstances, they are generated in our hearts. If only the lucky could hope, then it wouldn’t mean much. Hope is most valuable when circumstances are most dire. Hope lives in a series of “now” moments. Each breath delivers the potential to be unity. Each moment is ours to define. Pain, sickness, and death come to everybody. Hope is not the absence of these, hope is the belief that we and our families and friends can create dignity while we keep going.
Being hopeful is creating our meaning based on realizing our inherent wholeness. The search for people and ideas is not a search for a magical shortcut to happiness. The wholeness of hope engenders outreach and seeks to form community.
Give Hope
Seeds of hope do better when supported and tended by others. We all have the ability to support the beliefs of others as they strive to create meaning despite contingent circumstances. Listening closely can reveal what the passions are of the people we care about and what they do to create the story of their lives. Most people long for and thrive from connections that come from tuning in. But beware of psychopaths whose personal obsession interferes with the smallest ability to care or support others. There are good reasons to be careful—to wait to learn who to trust.
I believe that there are millions of horses that can gallop a thousand miles. We are surrounded by them right now. The moon is blue tonight when we choose to start a journey to judiciously trust and hope and help each other realize our dreams.
